ADHD Myth-Busting: Because “Just try harder” isn’t advice, it’s nonsense.

ADHD is one of the most misunderstood neurotypes out there.
People still think it’s just about being “distracted” or “bad at sitting still.”
So let’s break down a few common myths and why they’re wrong.
Myth 1: “ADHD means you can’t focus.”
Truth: We can focus just fine and sometimes too much. It’s called hyperfocus and it means spending six hours organizing your digital files instead of responding to one important email.
The issue isn’t lack of focus, it’s regulating where our attention goes.
Myth 2: “You just need to try harder.”
Truth: Trying harder is not a strategy. ADHD is a neurological condition, not a motivation issue. We’re usually already trying harder than everyone around us and still forgetting our keys while holding them. True story.
Myth 3: “Just use a planner.”
Truth: You mean the stack of half-used planners I bought in a fit of optimism?
Tools help, but they’re not a cure. Most of us know what we’re supposed to do, the challenge is doing it consistently.
Myth 4: “ADHD is just an excuse.”
Truth: If it were an excuse, I’d use it to avoid ever doing laundry or answering emails again. But ADHD isn’t about avoiding responsibility, it’s about navigating life with a brain that doesn’t follow the standard instruction manual.
Myth 5: “ADHD is only for boys/kids.”
Truth: ADHD affects adults too, especially women and it often looks different. Emotional regulation issues, overthinking, anxiety, and burnout? Yep. That’s ADHD, too. And hey, have you met me? I meet all of these points I have made. So if you're thinking omg that's me. Pal, you're in good company. We in this together.
So What Actually Helps?
-
Understanding how your brain works
-
Using strategies that match your actual energy (not ideal energy)
-
Giving yourself grace, not guilt (times 1000. I have to remind myself of this daily)
-
And throwing out the advice that starts with “just” as in “just focus,” “just be more organized,” “just calm down” I wish you'd JUST shut your big yapper.
We don’t need fixing. We need understanding.
And better memes. So go find them. Thanks.
